Section 7 Lifts the Cup

The Word Cup being held by the proud winners.
Section 7 has done it.  Hamda, Nouf, Rawdh and Zainab completed their amazing Word Cup run and claimed the Word Cup as their teachers, Jane and Tuba, cheered them to victory.

The final match score shows the continued domination of section 7, as they tallied 15 points.  However, each game within the match was remarkably close.  Section 7 won seven of the nine games played, but rarely did they have more than a two word advantage and often the difference between the teams was a fraction of a second.  Section 11 came closest to the champs with Rahaf, Mahra and Fatema Hamdan managing 9 points, even though they were missing their teammate Asma who was unable to play today. Section 11 was extremely close to winning several games and upsetting the balance of power, but Noora, Aisha, Fatima and Sara were always just one or two words short of putting themselves back into the match.

Congratulations to everyone who played and all of the teachers who supported their students throughout the competition.

Word Cup Final Preview

The fight for the ABP's most coveted trophy comes to its exciting conclusion tomorrow at 10:50 in FIS-2-11.  Sections 1, 7 and 11 have earned their places in the finals from the 16 classes that started less than two weeks ago.  While section 7 has been blowing away the competition in each round, they have yet to face section 1 or 11.  That can't be said about the girls from sections 1 and 11, as they've already played each other twice.  In the first round section 11 (12 points) got the better of section 1 (8 points) in a close match which also included semifinalists section 3 (11 points).  In the second round, however, section 1 got some revenge and beat their rivals 12 to 9.  That bit of history from the early rounds of the tournament will make tomorrows contest all the more exciting as they do their best to take down the favorites.

Tuba and Jane (section 7), Stephan and Sara (section 11) and Dan and Jerome (Section 1) will all be on hand to give their students last minute advice and if they are fortunate enough to coach the winning side, lift the Word Cup high into the air.  Come out and support your favorite Word Cup team in tomorrow's final.  Even if you aren't playing, you can still review the words from tomorrow's match.  The atmosphere should be worthy of any cup final.

Section 7 Leads the Way into Final Showdown

Hamda, Zainab, Noof and Rawdha put on another astonishing display of vocabulary prowess while racking up 22 points for section 7 in their semifinal matchup against section 16 and section 4.  They are undefeated after three matches and Tuba and Jane's students have been getting stronger each time they log on to quizlet.live.  Their fine form will be put to the test on Thursday when they match up against other finalists section 11 and section 1.  Asma, Rahaf, Mahra and Fatima put section 11 into the final by overcoming an impressive performance by section 903, the last remaining male campus team.  Stephan is the most experienced manager in the competition and he and his teaching partner Sarah will be doing all he can to prepare his prodigies for the final.  Section 1's Aldana, Nour, Mariam and Nujuud came from behind and managed to win five games in a row to see off the challenge from section 8.  Dan and Jerome had two teams in this match and are thrilled to have a chance to lift the cup as coaches in the ABP's final semester.

Word Cup Semifinal Tomorrow

In 24 hours, nine teams will attempt to take the next step in making their Word Cup dreams a reality.  The Semifinals will be competed in three separate matches and this time only the winners will advance to the Word Cup Final.  That means the competition will be more intense than ever between the remaining teams.  Sections 1, 7 and 903 were all winners in their Second Round matches, so they have been awarded the top seeds in each semifinal, but their rivals will be desperate to knock them out of the competition.

Interestingly, three teaching pairs are emerging as vocabulary powerhouses.  Dan & Jerome, Jane & Tuba and Peter & Don all have two classes still competing for the cup.  Will one of them have what it takes to win the prize?

The word list has been available since last Thursday, but it isn't too late for students to get ready for tomorrow's big games.  Here are the matchups.

Nine Teams Advance from Thrilling Second Round

It was an exciting day in the Word Cup, but no match has ever been as breathtaking as Match #3.  Several games in this battle between male and female students were won by the smallest of margins.  The match required two extra games to separate the evenly balanced teams.  When the dust finally settled, Rashid Anwar, Rashed Abdullah, Mohamed Khaled and Abdulla Salem emerged as the winners for section 902.  Section 4 finished in second place and section 8 eliminated section 902 by milliseconds in the closest two team tiebreaker ever witnessed.

Match #3 could not have been closer.

In match #1 Sections 1, 11 and 16 could breath easy with their advancement guaranteed due to section 15s no show.  There was still a lot to play for in terms of seeding for Monday's semifinal and Section 1's Sara, Fatima, Aisha and Noor took care of business by racking up 12 points in their victory over section 11 (9 points) and section 16 (6 points).

Match #2 saw a dominating performance by Hamda, Noof, Rawdha and Zainab of section 7.  Their second victory in a row and huge score of 19 points makes them the clear favorites to lift the cup next Thursday.  Section 3 did their best to keep pace and managed an impressive 10 points, while section 2 did just enough to get past section 5 and advance to the semifinal.

Nine teams now remain and will be competing in the semifinal round on Monday, February 18th.  The words that will be used can be found here for those who want to study over the weekend.   The semifinal will be played in three groups of three teams.

Round Two Matches Revealed

The round two match schedule has just been released from the ABP Word Cup Headquarters, and there are some exciting matchups ahead.  In Match #1, two of yesterdays winners square off (sections 11 and 16) but sections 1 and 15 are eager to show that they have improved and deserve to stay in the competition.  Match #2 looks extremely competitive with sections 7 and 3 full of confidence but aware that a few wrong answers may put them in danger of elimination.  In Match #3, there is a group winner from yesterday (section 902) as well as the highest scoring second place team from Round 1 (section 4).

Teachers will be pushing their students' vocabulary to new levels in the coming days.  Tension will be high and the competition fierce on Thursday as one team from each group will be eliminated and the three best will move on to next Monday's semifinal!

Section 7, 11, 16 and 902 Shine in Opener

The Word Cup got off to a fantastic start with today's first round action.  As expected, Section 11 put in a strong performance and won Match #3 after some intense training sessions with Word Cup winning coach Stephan, but it was Mahra, Amna, Amal and Alyazia of section16 that topped the scoring with an amazing 13 points in Match #1.  Laura, Sharifa, Shaima and Mahia were just one point behind in that match, as they represented section 4.  They will be a tough team to beat in the future.  In Match #2, Sections 7's Hamda, Zainab, Noof and Rawdha cruised to victory with a strong 12-point performance.  Mohammed Husein, Suhail, Sultan and Hareth of section 902 made sure that the men would top one group with their impressive victory in Match #4.  The first three teams from each group will play in the 2nd round on Thursday, and everyone can start learning the round 2 words already.  Sadly, we must say farewell to sections 9, 10, 12 and 901 as they have been eliminated from the competition.  Thank you for playing.

Champions Among Us

A huge celebration is waiting for this years
champions.

Who are the favorites to lift the Word Cup next Thursday?  This has been the hottest topic among teachers and students over the last few weeks and so far, no clear front runner has emerged.  There are, however, two participants that have tasted victory before.  Stephan Ottewill coached the Waves to EGAP 4 glory last year, while Fatema Yousef was a key member on the memorable Roses EGAP 3 run.  Both of their sections are full of confidence ahead of todays opening matches, but time will tell if they have what it takes to lift the cup again.  Advancing to the next round is the key to this stage of the competition.  In today’s matches, three teams from each group will advance but one will be eliminated.  Good luck to all of you!
